CWC warns Telangana of possible water shortage, urges prudent use of Singur reservoir
HYDERABAD: The Central Water Commission (CWC) has warned Telangana about a possible water shortage and urged the state to prioritise reservoir water for drinking purposes in the coming days.
In a letter dated June 25, CWC Chairman Anupam Prasad said the Commission reviewed weekly storage levels in eight major reservoirs across Telangana. The review found that the Singur reservoir on the Manjira River holds only 4.52 tmc ft of water, far below its usual storage of around 11 tmc ft for this time of the year.
Singur reservoir under repair
The CWC highlighted the Singur reservoir, which is currently undergoing repairs. It urged project authorities to use the available water prudently and efficiently to prevent any possible shortage.
The Singur reservoir supplies 75 million gallons of drinking water every day. It serves large parts of west Hyderabad, including Cyberabad, the Financial District, and several other areas of the city.
Telangana told to closely monitor reservoirs
The Commission also asked the Telangana government to closely monitor water levels in all reservoirs. It urged officials to take timely steps to prevent water stress if storage levels continue to decline.
The CWC further directed the state to follow all tribunal awards and court orders governing reservoir operations while managing available water resources.
