HYDERABAD: Dr S. Venkata Mohan, Chief Scientist, Department of Energy and Environmental Engineering, CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR–IICT), has been awarded the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar – Vigyan Shri for 2025 by the Government of India. The honour acknowledges his outstanding contributions to environmental science and bioengineering.

Focus on sustainable bioengineering

Dr Mohan is internationally recognised for his research in environmental biotechnology, particularly in metabolic modulation of microorganisms for sustainable applications in energy generation, waste valorisation, and environmental restoration. Over three decades, his work has helped establish frameworks for circular bioeconomy and sustainability-driven bioengineering.

His research has led to the development of integrated bioprocess systems that promote resource recovery, waste-to-wealth conversion, and low-carbon energy solutions. His innovations in biorefineries, wastewater treatment, and carbon dioxide biosequestration have offered scalable models for sustainable environmental management in line with India’s climate resilience and clean energy goals.

Global recognition for research and mentorship

With more than 450 publications (H-index 106; citations exceeding 39,000), 16 patents, and guidance to 42 Ph.D. scholars, Dr Mohan has significantly advanced the field of environmental bioengineering. He has previously received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, INAE–SERB Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship, and DBT–Tata Innovation Fellowship.

Leadership in environmental research

The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar – Vigyan Shri is one of India’s highest scientific honours, celebrating excellence and societal impact. Dr Mohan’s selection reflects his leadership, commitment to sustainable science, and enduring contribution to environmental innovation. He currently serves as Director of the CSIR–National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR–NEERI), Nagpur.
