Contract Faculty From 12 Universities Across Telangana Join 'chalo Osmania' Demanding Regularization

Hyderabad: Hundreds of contract assistant professors across Telangana launched the “Chalo Osmania” protest today, April 23, 2025, as part of their ongoing indefinite strike, demanding regularization of their services.

Responding to the call, around 300 faculty members from the Arts College of Osmania University marched to the university’s administrative building. The protestors, including several women faculty members, staged a sit-in on the road under the harsh summer sun after they were denied permission to set up a tent.

Contract faculty from all 12 state universities participated, with representatives from Satavahana University, RGUKT, Ambedkar Open University, Kakatiya University, Palamuru University, and Telangana University among the crowd.

BC movement leader and National President R. Krishnaiah attended the protest and voiced strong support. “It is the government’s immediate responsibility to address the demands of contract faculty who have been working for years without job security. While vast sums are spent elsewhere, the government has failed to allocate funds for this genuine issue. I assure you, the government will have to respond. I stand with you until this is resolved,” he said.

BJP MLA from Adilabad, Payal Shankar, also backed the movement. “Your demand is justified. I will raise the issue with the Chief Minister and, if needed, meet the Governor as well,” he said.

Progressive Organisation of Women (POW) leader Sandhya questioned the government’s delay. “What is stopping the government from regularizing these teachers? It’s unfair to exploit them for so many years,” she said.

Prof. Papi Reddy, former Chairman of the Telangana State Council of Higher Education, dismissed concerns about legal or academic hurdles. “There are no obstacles to regularizing these faculty members. If regularization takes time, the government should at least provide UGC pay scales with job security immediately,” he said. He urged the protesting faculty to stay united.

The protest was led by several key organizers, including Dr. Parasuram, Dr. Dharmateja, Dr. Velpula Kumar, Dr. Upender, Dr. Vijayender Reddy, Dr. Tallapalli Venkateswarlu, Dr. Vinitha Pandey, Dr. Sailaja Reddy, Dr. Priya, Dr. Niranjan (Kakatiya University), Dr. Bhumaya (Palamuru University), and Dr. Joshna and Dr. Narayana (Telangana University).

The indefinite strike continues as faculty members demand a clear and immediate response from the state government.
