Congress aspirant clears ₹8 crore tax dues before Nizamabad civic polls
HYDERABAD: Congress aspirant K Shamantha Reddy paid ₹8 crore in pending municipal taxes to the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation on Friday ahead of filing her nomination to contest from Division No. 19.
Dues linked to hotel property
The payment relates to outstanding municipal tax on a hotel property in Nizamabad, in which Shamantha Reddy is a partner. Her husband K Narender Reddy is also a partner in Vamsi Hotel.
High Court deposit reflected as pending
According to municipal records, the dues continued to show as pending as the hotel management had earlier challenged the assessment in the High Court and deposited tax amounts with the court.
Nomination filed after full payment
Under municipal election norms, candidates must clear all outstanding taxes before filing nominations. In compliance, Shamantha Reddy paid the ₹8 crore directly to the corporation and submitted her papers.
With the mayor’s post in the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation reserved for a woman, several leaders and first-time contenders have entered the race. Shamantha Reddy’s nomination, accompanied by the large tax payment, created a buzz in the city.
Speaking to a journalist, Narender Reddy said the hotel had been paying taxes regularly through the court as per earlier proceedings. However, under the Municipal Act, the amount continued to appear as pending in official records. He said his wife decided to contest the civic elections to serve the people and therefore cleared the dues in full.
