Concerns raised over workplace safety at Gachibowli Flyover construction

Hyderabad: Hyderabad residents have expressed concerns over the safety conditions at the Gachibowli flyover construction site, citing the lack of safety measures for workers. With no safety harnesses in place, workers are at risk of fatal accidents if they slip or fall from height. The recent hammer falling incident at the ORR-Kondapur flyover construction, which narrowly missed a passenger in a moving car, has further highlighted these safety concerns.
Imran Jeddy, a local resident, spoke with the Hyderabad Mail about the dangers at the Gachibowli site. “This is a violation of safety regulations. The lack of proper safety measures is alarming. We will never learn the importance of workplace safety until a tragedy occurs,” he said.
Imran Jeddy also took to social media to bring attention to the issue, tagging the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner and the Hyderabad Collector. In his post, he called for the enforcement of worker safety measures at the construction site, emphasizing the imminent danger posed by the absence of safety gear.

Please enforce worker safety measures at the under construction flyovers. No safety harness. One slip away from certain death.

The hammer incident at the ORR-Kondapur flyover construction last Friday raised further alarm when it pierced the windshield of a moving car, narrowly missing the front passenger. While no injuries were reported, witnesses described the situation as “terrifying.”
The contractor’s casual response when questioned by traffic police was, “Whatever fell has fallen, what’s the big deal?” this has sparked outrage among residents, many of whom are calling for stronger action to address unsafe construction practices.
Traffic police have noted similar incidents involving falling materials at the site, and residents are concerned that authorities may only take action after a fatal accident occurs.
According to the Telangana Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, employers are required to implement various safety measures for construction workers, including scaffolding, safety harnesses, and proper safety training. However, these measures appear to be lacking at the Gachibowli flyover site.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad traffic police issued a traffic advisory for commuters due to ongoing construction of the SRDP Shilpa Layout Phase-II flyover at Gachibowli Junction. Traffic delays are expected for the next two months, with diversions in place around the construction site.
Motorists traveling from ZPHS towards Gachibowli are advised to take diversions via Rolling Hills or Radisson Hotel. Vehicles coming from Gachibowli towards Kondapur will be diverted through DLF Road.
This construction work follows a similar advisory issued in October, when the Gachibowli flyover was closed for repairs, causing significant disruptions to traffic.
