Commerce remains top choice in Telangana degree admissions
HYDERABAD: Commerce has emerged as the most preferred undergraduate stream in Telangana, with more than 42,000 students confirming admissions through the Degree Online Services Telangana (DOST) 2026 counselling process.
According to DOST data, 42,000 students secured seats in Commerce courses. BSc Physical Sciences followed with 21,893 admissions, while BSc Life Sciences attracted 19,599 students. BA Arts recorded 17,555 admissions.
Industry demand drives Commerce admissions
A. Patrick, chairman of the Board of Studies in Commerce at Osmania University, said Commerce continues to attract the highest number of admissions as students and parents increasingly view it as a pathway to diverse careers, professional qualifications and entrepreneurship.
He said Hyderabad’s expanding banking, financial services, information technology, fintech and Global Capability Centres have further strengthened demand for Commerce graduates.
Curriculum must evolve for AI-driven economy
Patrick said Commerce education should incorporate emerging specialisations such as business analytics, financial analytics, fintech, AI-enabled accounting, digital taxation, e-commerce and environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting to prepare students for an AI-driven economy.
“After graduation, students have good opportunities in corporate finance, banking, auditing, taxation, compliance, business analytics and government services, while also pursuing professional qualifications such as Chartered Accountant (CA), Cost and Management Accountant (CMA), Company Secretary (CS), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA),” he said.
