Poster Ban Enforcement in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Following a notice issued by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on September 27, 2024, banning unauthorised posters, banners, wall writings, and cut-outs, residents of Hyderabad are voicing their frustration over the ongoing presence of these materials throughout the city.

The GHMC’s notice aimed to uphold the aesthetic appeal of the city and maintain cleanliness in both public and private spaces. However, citizens have reported finding numerous banners and posters still displayed, prompting questions about the effectiveness of the ban.

Social activist Harish Kumar Daga (@HarishKumarDaga) raised the issue on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He expressed disappointment, stating, “In a matter of 10 days, it’s painful to see no action taken on the orders of @CommissionrGHMC. Despite the ban, new posters can still be found across the city. While political banners may be more challenging to remove, why are movie posters still allowed?”

Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Harish Kumar Daga, the social activist further stated that despite his initial report and the subsequent removal of some posters, many remained in place. He noted that the GHMC’s order banning posters has been in existence since 2016, but was republished without clarity on penalties or accountability for violations. “Earlier, the Advertisement Wing had a dedicated officials who enforced penalties daily. Now, there’s confusion over who is responsible for enforcement,” he explained.

Harish Daga also mentioned that an Assistant Medical Health Officer responded to his tweet, stating they were addressing the issue, but he felt it was not their job to do. He also received a call from a senior official urging him to retract his tweet, to which he firmly replied, “If I am wrong, let them sue me.”

AMOH18 @amoh18ghmc replied to @HarishKumarDaga, stating, “Swachh Namskar sir. We are on the job sir. Thank you sir.”

Earlier, the GHMC’s notice stated the need for strict measures against unauthorised materials and highlighted coordination with local printers to ensure no printing occurs without valid permission. The notice also directed Deputy Commissioners to impose penalties and enforce regulations regarding wall posters, cutouts, and flexis.

As of now, citizens are calling for more effective enforcement of the ban to ensure a cleaner and more visually appealing city.
