After Sacred Heart Church, CSI gets eviction notice from SCR
Secunderabad: The Church of South India (CSI) has been served an eviction notice by the South Central Railway (SCR), claiming that the religious structure in question was built illegally on encroached land in Lallaguda, Secunderabad. The notice follows a similar move against Sacred Heart Church, a nearly 100-year-old place of worship in Lallaguda, Secunderabad, which has also been asked to vacate the premises by December 12, 2024.
The church managements have expressed their shock and disappointment, arguing that they have been conducting regular prayers and religious services at these locations for nearly a century. They contend that it is unfair to issue such notices, particularly when they have consistently paid utility bills, including electricity and water charges, on time. Church officials insist that the buildings are used solely for religious purposes and are not intended for personal gain.
In response to the notices, the Ministry of Railways has asserted that the land on which the churches are located belongs to SCR and that no permission was granted for the construction of the religious structures. SCR officials have maintained that both churches were built without the necessary authorisation and are therefore considered illegal encroachments on railway property.
As per the eviction notice, the churches are required to vacate the premises by December 12, 2024. Railway authorities have warned that failure to comply will result in eviction under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Act, 1971. Legal action, including penalties, may also be taken against the organisers of the churches if they do not vacate the land.
