Chudi Bazaar’s garbage attracts stray dogs, posing risks to public health

Hyderabad: A pile of garbage has been dumped on the main road of Chudi Bazaar, Hyderabad creating a hazardous environment for both residents and stray dogs that are foraging through the refuse. This accumulation of waste is not only a health hazard, potentially leading to health issues, but it also highlights the pressing need for more dustbins in the city, as littering continues to be a widespread issue.
Social activists have called on sanitation officials to address the problem immediately by cleaning the area and providing adequate dustbins to help maintain a cleaner city. Shaandaar Hyderabad (@swachhhyd) on X (formerly known as Twitter) has brought this pressing issue to public attention, highlighting the urgent need for action. https://x.com/swachhhyd/status/1844598562216128881?s=08
Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Shaandaar Hyderabad, a social activist, said, “I request the officials to re-introduce mobile courts. On-the-spot fines and judgments are essential. GHMC has already put up cameras and boards indicating fines for littering. We urge @hydcitypolice and @CYBTRAFFIC to utilise CCTV footage as evidence.”
Despite the efforts of thousands of sanitation workers from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) who clean the streets daily, garbage-strewn roads remain a common sight in the city. Officials have identified that garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) need increased attention from sanitary inspectors.
The civic body has installed CCTV cameras in some areas, enabling officials to analyse footage to identify and penalise violators. Locals have repeatedly voiced their concerns to civic authorities about individuals who irresponsibly dispose of garbage on the streets. Although various measures have been attempted to track and penalise litterers, success has been limited.
In an effort to combat this ongoing issue, GHMC officials are collaborating with members of Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs) to install additional CCTV cameras in the Uppal Circle. According to officials, these cameras will first issue warnings to potential violators. If a person ignores the warning and litters, the camera will capture their image and send it to the regional civic office, resulting in a Rs. 1,000 fine.
During the BRS regime, the corporation distributed two dustbins to every household within the city limits. Garbage collection vehicles operate on alternate days for a nominal fee. However, addressing the current situation in Chudi Bazaar is necessary to tackle the city’s littering problem and ensure public health and safety.
