Why Hyderabad’s 145-year-old Chiran Fort Club demolition has triggered a heritage row

HYDERABAD: Allegations have surfaced over the ongoing demolition of the 145-year-old Chiran Fort Club, a notified Grade-II heritage structure in Begumpet, with claims that the site is being cleared for a construction company office.
Paigah family member Obaid Ur Rehman alleged that several structures within the premises were demolished on Saturday. He said the property falls under protected heritage classification and should not be altered without due approvals.
“The doors have been removed in the Chiran palace and it may soon be demolished,” Rehman said, adding that a club operating on the premises since the 1980s has now been shut.
Ownership and redevelopment plan under scrutiny
The property is owned by Prem Sagar Rao, a legislator from Mancherial constituency in Telangana. According to allegations, the demolition is being carried out to make way for a construction company office.
Rehman, who resides in a portion of the nearby Paigah Palace, said the activity raises concerns about enforcement of heritage protection norms in the city.
No official response from the owner or authorities was available at the time of reporting.
