₹50,000 demand row: Telangana DGP to revive special drive

HYDERABAD: A woman from Chintal has alleged that a group demanded ₹50,000 before allowing her family to enter their new home, prompting Telangana DGP C V Anand, IPS, to announce a fresh police drive against alleged begging rackets and extortion.
In a video shared on September 4, the woman alleged that the group followed her family to their new house and reached the premises before them. She said the group then demanded money from the family.
She further alleged that the members abused her family and exposed themselves after she began recording the incident.
Police action or registration of an FIR in connection with the Chintal complaint could not be confirmed at the time of writing.
Reacting to the issue, Anand said he had been seeing similar complaints against transgender persons in recent times. He recalled that, during his tenure as Hyderabad police commissioner, the police had conducted a special drive against what he described as begging rackets and extortion after such complaints increased.
“I am seeing these complaints against transgenders of late. In fact, as CP Hyderabad, we had done a special drive to control the menace of begging rackets and extortions by TGs when similar complaints had gone up,” Anand said.
“I will definitely instruct all CPs to take up this special drive once again,” he added.
Anand also pointed to the Telangana government’s efforts to bring transgender persons into the mainstream by employing them as traffic assistants and in the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA).
He said transgender persons working in these roles had “done very well without any complaints”.
The DGP’s remarks come against the backdrop of the Chintal woman’s allegations, though the complaint itself had not been independently verified at the time of publication.
