Renovation work partially ruins Charminar’s historic clock

Hyderabad: The iconic 135-year-old clock, located on the eastern side of the Charminar, was partially damaged during recent renovation work. An iron rod used during repairs accidentally struck the clock, causing some damage to its dial board. Despite this incident, the clock continues to function.
Officials discovered the damage to the dial board while inspecting the ongoing renovation work.
The Charminar is a historic monument built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. It has been a central piece of Hyderabad’s cultural and architectural heritage. In 1889, clocks were installed on all four sides of the Charminar, adding to the monument’s charm.
The Charminar is located on the eastern bank of the Musi River and is surrounded by bustling local markets, making it a popular tourist attraction. It is also a significant site for festival celebrations, such as Eid-ul-Adha and Eid al-Fitr, due to its proximity to the Makkah Masjid.
The Archaeological Survey of India recognizes the Charminar as an archaeological and architectural treasure. It is famous for its four grand arches and ornate minarets, which are the reason behind its name. The name “Charminar” translates from Urdu to “Four Pillars,” reflecting the structure’s design.
The Charminar holds immense historical significance and serves as a lively center of activity, especially at night when it is illuminated. It has become a bustling hub for shopping and socializing. The surrounding markets, such as the renowned Laad Bazaar, add to its status as a vibrant cultural landmark and a symbol of Hyderabad’s heritage.
Recently, however, night tourism in Hyderabad’s old city has faced challenges due to strict police enforcement, which has led to early closures of hotels and commercial establishments. This crackdown has significantly impacted the nightlife around Charminar, causing both locals and tourists to reconsider visiting the old city after 10 p.m. Until a month ago, the Charminar area thrived with activity well into the night.
