Charminar plaster peels off after heavy rain in Hyderabad

Charminar, Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: A portion of the outer plaster of the historic Charminar peeled off following heavy rain in Hyderabad’s Old City on Tuesday night.

The white cement plaster on the side facing Laad Bazaar came off after a spell of rain that lasted around 30 minutes. Around 37 mm of rain was recorded during the spell.

Charminar security staff reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and removed the fallen material from the area.

An Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) official said a small portion of the outer wall below the minar on the left side had collapsed late at night. No one was injured in the incident.

“A small portion of the outer wall below the minar on the left side collapsed late at night. Fortunately, nobody was injured. A tender is already in process to repair that portion of the exterior, as it had become loose. Because of the deterioration, the repair work had already been planned,” the ASI official said.

The damage occurred after heavy rain lashed Hyderabad on Tuesday evening. Reports on the incident also said the affected section was on the Laad Bazaar-facing side of the monument.
