Chandanagar gets double-decker design for highway, Metro
HYDERABAD: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) have jointly finalised a double-decker design at Gangaram in Chandanagar on the Mumbai national highway.
A Metro rail extension from Miyapur to Patancheru has been proposed along this route, while the NHAI is constructing flyovers at the location. Union minister Nitin Gadkari had earlier suggested that wherever Metro expansion is planned at locations where flyovers are being built, the structures should be designed as double-deckers, with the flyover below and the Metro viaduct above.
A similar structure was built in Nagpur. TOI reports that Nagpur’s double-decker projects have integrated highway flyovers and Metro viaducts at different levels.
Officials wary of changes on other stretches
There is also a proposal for flyovers from LB Nagar to Hayathnagar. Roads and Buildings minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy is insisting that a double-decker structure be adopted there as well.
However, the alignment for the LB Nagar-Hayathnagar Metro extension has already been proposed along the service road and detailed project reports (DPRs) have been submitted to the Centre.
Metro rail officials told the minister that adopting a double-decker design at this stage would require changes to the DPRs. They said this could lead to delays as well as an increase in project costs.
The state chief secretary is hopeful that approvals for the second phase will be received within two months.
Recent TOI reports have also described the proposed LB Nagar-Hayathnagar corridor as a three-tier structure, with service roads at ground level, the highway in the middle and the Metro line on the top deck.
