PM Modi Visit Turns Flashpoint as Telangana Cries ‘No Intimation’

Revanth Reddy Addressing Media On Centre Telangana Delimitation Dispute

HYDERABAD: Tensions between the Centre and the Telangana government have escalated beyond a policy disagreement over delimitation, evolving into a broader political and administrative standoff. Notably, this escalation comes just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the state on May 10.

Revanth Reddy Leads Opposition to Delimitation Proposal

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has emerged as a key critic of the Centre’s proposed delimitation framework. In fact, his outreach to southern Chief Ministers and opposition leaders has amplified concerns about the potential impact of a population-based model. Many fear such a framework could reduce representation for southern states.

Moreover, the controversy ties into the NDA government’s larger legislative agenda, including the Women’s Reservation Bill and future delimitation plans. Opposition parties, led by Congress, argue that states which have effectively controlled population growth may face disadvantages under the proposed system.

‘Hybrid Model’ Proposal Triggers Political Pushback

In response, Revanth Reddy has written to several Chief Ministers and the Prime Minister, framing the issue as a structural imbalance. He has proposed a “hybrid model” that incorporates economic contribution, such as Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), alongside population.

However, BJP leaders have strongly rejected this idea. Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy and other party leaders from Telangana have dismissed the proposal as impractical and politically motivated. As a result, the exchange has further sharpened the political divide between the state and the Centre.

PM Visit Sparks Coordination Concerns

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit has triggered fresh friction. The programme is expected to include inaugurations and development events, particularly at AIIMS Bibinagar.

However, Revanth Reddy has stated that the state government has not received any official communication regarding the visit. Instead, he said authorities learned about the schedule through media reports and statements by Union Minister Kishan Reddy.

Consequently, this lack of clarity has raised questions about administrative coordination. Typically, both central and state governments jointly plan such visits, with the Chief Minister participating in official engagements.

Furthermore, Revanth Reddy questioned whether the visit constitutes a government programme or a party-led event. He added that the state’s role would depend on its nature.

NDSA Chairman Row Adds to Friction

Adding to the tensions, remarks by Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar have sparked another controversy. He reportedly questioned the propriety of National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) Chairman Anil Jain accompanying the Chief Minister during a visit to the Medigadda barrage.

In response, Revanth Reddy reacted sharply. He argued that similar questions could apply to officials who attend meetings with Union ministers, thereby highlighting what he sees as a double standard.

Uncertainty Over Coordination Persists

As political exchanges intensify, the Prime Minister’s visit is set to test Centre–state coordination. At present, it remains unclear whether both sides will activate formal communication channels in time to ensure proper protocol for public infrastructure events.
