HYDERABAD: Domalguda police arrested a caretaker for allegedly robbing and assaulting an elderly couple at their residence in Himayathnagar. The accused, identified as Parvathi Shankara Matam Govardhan (27), was taken into custody on October 16, 2025, and 6.7 tolas of gold ornaments along with a mobile phone were recovered from him.

According to police, the offence occurred between 18.00 and 20.00 hours on October 12, 2025, at Flat No.15, Heritage Apartments, Himayathnagar. The victims, Anusuya (83) and Anand Rao (86), sustained serious head injuries after being attacked with a pestle. They were later admitted to Shalini Hospital, Barkatpura.

Caretaker absconded after robbery

The couple’s son-in-law, Joginapalli Sreedhar Rao, lodged a complaint on October 13, 2025, stating that their caretaker Govardhan had gone missing after the incident and his phone was switched off. The complainant noticed that four gold bangles, a gold chain (mangalsutra) and a mobile phone were missing from the house.

Based on the complaint, a case was registered in Cr. No. 307/2025 under Section 309(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Domalguda police station. Detective Inspector Ch. Sudhakar Rao led the investigation under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police K. Shilpa Valli, IPS, and Additional DCP B. Anand.

Addiction to betting led to crime

Police said the accused had been employed as a caretaker since November 2024, drawing a monthly salary of ₹25,000. During this time, he gained the trust of the family. However, he became addicted to online betting on platforms such as 91club, gold778.com, and 1win, and incurred heavy losses.

To overcome his debts, Govardhan allegedly attacked the elderly couple and decamped with their jewellery. He later travelled to Kankipadu , where he pledged four gold bangles at Muthoot Finance for ₹3,25,000 and spent the proceeds. The remaining mangalsutra was retained for later disposal. He was eventually traced and arrested from Kunderu village, Kankipadu mandal, and confessed to the crime.
