Canada-Telangana partnership explained: From infrastructure to higher education
HYDERABAD: Canada and Telangana on Tuesday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, innovation, education and sustainable development during talks between Canadian High Commissioner Chris Cooter and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in Hyderabad.
The meeting focused on expanding bilateral engagement across emerging sectors while exploring opportunities for Canadian participation in Telangana’s infrastructure and economic development initiatives.
Canada proposes stronger institutional and business engagement
During the meeting, Cooter invited the chief minister to lead a high-level delegation to Canada to strengthen institutional and business partnerships between Canada and Telangana.
The High Commissioner expressed interest in Telangana’s flagship infrastructure projects, including the Musi River Development Project, the Hyderabad Metro Rail expansion and the proposed Future City. He said these projects present opportunities for Canadian expertise and investment.
Cooter also highlighted recent Canadian investments in Telangana, including Firan Technology Group’s decision to establish a manufacturing facility in Hyderabad, the launch of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)’s Global Capability Centre in the city, and the partnership between CPP Investments and Hyderabad-based CtrlS Datacenters, under which CPP Investments has committed up to CAD 1 billion.
Chief Minister seeks Canadian support for green growth
Revanth Reddy outlined Telangana’s growth in information technology, life sciences, defence and aerospace sectors. He said Hyderabad has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing destinations for Global Capability Centres, attracting several Fortune 500 companies.
The chief minister also explained the government’s vision for the Musi River Rejuvenation Project, describing it as an initiative to create a sustainable riverfront economy. He sought Canada’s partnership in renewable energy, including solarisation projects and the state’s transition to a green economy.
Highlighting Telangana’s efforts to become a global knowledge and innovation hub, Revanth Reddy said several international universities are exploring opportunities to establish campuses in Hyderabad. He proposed that a consortium of Canadian universities establish a multi-university campus in the city to promote academic collaboration, research and talent development.
Canadian trade delegation to visit Telangana
The chief minister invited Canadian companies, investors, universities and innovation partners to participate in the second edition of the Telangana Global Investors Summit, scheduled to be held in December.
Speaking after the meeting, Cooter said Telangana’s investor-friendly policies, governance model and focus on job creation make it one of India’s promising destinations for global investment. He said the state’s talent pool and innovation ecosystem have strengthened investor confidence.
The High Commissioner also announced that a Canadian trade delegation will visit Telangana in the coming months to explore collaboration in energy, urban development, defence and aerospace.
Advisor and Ex-Officio Special Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister K. Ramakrishna Rao, Invest Telangana Chief Executive Officer B. Ajith Reddy, Telangana Global Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Managing Director Shashanka, Information Technology, Electronics and Communications Department Joint Secretary Anudeep Durishetty, and Director of Industries Nikhil Chakravarthy attended the meeting.
