BRS leaders, including MLC Kavitha, placed under house arrest in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Several senior leaders of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) were placed under house arrest on Friday, December 6, 2024, as they prepared for a large-scale protest at the 125-foot statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar near Necklace Road in Hyderabad. The police deployed a significant number of personnel at the residences of the leaders early in the morning, stating that they had been placed under house arrest.
Among those detained were MLC Kavitha, former minister T. Harish Rao, MLAs KP Vivekanand, Dr. Sanjay, and BRS leader RS Praveen Kumar.
The protest was organised by the BRS in response to the arrests of its leaders by the Telangana government and the alleged constitutional violations committed by the Congress. The demonstration was set to condemn the recent arrests of MLAs Padi Kaushik Reddy, Harish Rao, and others.
In anticipation of the protest, police forces were also stationed at the BRS State headquarters in Telangana Bhavan, where the party’s MLAs, MLCs, MPs, elected representatives, and activists were scheduled to gather before heading to the protest site. BRS working president KT Rama Rao was expected to attend the demonstration at Telangana Bhavan at around 10:30 a.m.
BRS leader T. Harish Rao expressed his outrage on social media, writing, “We strongly condemn the arrests and detentions of BRS leaders and activists across the state. Why are these restrictions being imposed when we want to pay homage to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, on his death anniversary? This is a reflection of your autocratic and dictatorial rule.”
He further stated, “On one hand, you are propagating that people’s rule is a victory celebration, and on the other hand, you have declared an undeclared emergency in the state. Even Ambedkar, who is at the heart of Hyderabad, must be shocked to see your undemocratic policies and disregard for the Constitution. We demand the immediate release of our leaders and activists.”
