Govt razes poor homes, spares MLA Arekapudi Gandhi land: BRS

HYDERABAD: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) legislators and former ministers accused the state government of demolishing houses belonging to the people with low-income to shield influential people. They alleged that the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) was instilling fear among citizens through selective demolitions.
Following the directions of BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, party MLAs, MLCs, and former ministers inspected land at Survey No. 307 in Gajularamaram. They claimed that family members of MLA Arekapudi Gandhi had encroached on 11 acres of government land in the area.
HYDRAA officials, the leaders said, demolished about 270 houses belonging to poor families in the same survey number but took no action when the fencing around Gandhi’s 11-acre plot was rebuilt a day after it was removed. They alleged that Gandhi, who was elected from BRS before joining another party, had been rewarded with land worth about ₹1,100 crore.
BRS leaders including K.P. Vivekanand, Madhusudanachari, Jagadish Reddy, Srinivas Goud, Palla Rajeshwar Reddy, Madhavaram Krishna Rao, Sunitha Laxma Reddy, Bandari Laxma Reddy and Shambhipur Raju participated in the inspection.
BRS leaders inspect Musi constructions
Elsewhere, former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy visited a construction site by Sri Aditya Kedia Realtors on the Musi river at Narsingi, accompanied by MLAs Sudheer Reddy, Rajashekar Reddy, Laxma Reddy, MLC Naveen Reddy and former MLA Pilot Rohit Reddy. She alleged that while houses built by the people with low-income along the Musi were demolished citing river beautification, no action was taken against high-end constructions.
“Is HYDRAA meant only to raze poor people’s homes and collect money from the rich?” she asked.
Arekapudi Gandhi responds to allegations
Reacting to the accusations, MLA Arekapudi Gandhi said his family had lawfully purchased the 11-acre plot in 1991. “Nine family members and others jointly bought the land, which was patta land. The details were mentioned in my election affidavit,” he said, adding that he was ready for any probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation or the Enforcement Directorate into the assets of all MLAs from 2014 to 2024.
He accused Kukatpally MLA Madhavaram Krishna Rao of spreading false information and challenged him to face an inquiry. “If a sitting judge or the ED investigates both our assets, I am ready. Are you?” Gandhi said.
