Upping the ante on the Congress government’s decision on the land allotment of Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University (JNAFAU) on their university campus, employees of Dr BR Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) demanded to rescind its decision.

The Congress government is actively considering relocating the JNAFAU from its Masab Tank location to the Open University campus in Jubilee Hills locality in Hyderabad. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) has been protesting against the state government’s decision to allot 10 acres of land on the sprawling campus of BRAOU.

The employees JAC, comprising of teaching, non-teaching and technical staff, are concerned about the decreasing campus area of the university. They said the varsity was originally set up on 53 acres of land in Jubilee Hills as Andhra Pradesh Open University which was later renamed as Dr BR Ambedkar Open University. Over the course of years, the university lost nearly 18 acres of land to various government projects, they added.

The BRAOU’s JAC have warned of intensifying their protests if the government goes ahead with its proposal to shift JNAFAU on their campus. The university has been imparting distance education to students from poor sections and rural areas since 1982.
