Boy rescued from lift in Masab Tank, dies in hospital

Hyderabad: A six-year-old boy, Arnav, who was rescued by Disaster Response Force (DRF) and Fire Department personnel after being trapped in an elevator shaft at Masab Tank on Friday afternoon, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2025, while undergoing treatment at Niloufer Hospital in Hyderabad.
Arnav was trapped between the lift door and the wall at Maffer Comfortech Apartments in Shantinagar. The incident occurred around 2:29 p.m. on Friday when the boy, playing with other children, slipped while riding the lift and fell into the gap between the lift and the slab near the first floor.
The rescue operation began immediately after a call was made to the HYDRAA DRF team. The first team arrived within 10 minutes, followed by two more teams. The lift was powered off, and personnel used gas cutters and fire department tools to cut through the lift frame and the slab to reach the boy.
At 4:35 p.m., Arnav was safely rescued and rushed to Niloufer Hospital for treatment. The operation, led by District Fire Officer A. Yajnanarayana and Station Fire Officer P. Dattu, was praised by local residents for the successful and challenging rescue.
However, despite the rescue team’s best efforts, the boy’s condition worsened, and he passed away on Saturday. His body was later shifted to Osmania Hospital.
