BJP corporators in Hyderabad reportedly faced police aggression during the GHMC Standing Committee meeting

HYDERABAD: Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao condemned the attack on BJP corporators at the GHMC Standing Committee meeting on Thursday. He called for immediate action against the responsible officials and urged that they be held accountable.

BJP corporators allegedly faced police aggression while voicing public concerns and asking officials for clarifications. The BJP chief described this as an assault on democracy. “This kind of action, for simply asking questions about public issues, the use of development funds, and demanding transparency and accountability in GHMC’s functioning, is a testament to the dictatorship of the ruling party,” he added.

He added that it was deplorable that the GHMC Mayor and Commissioner have repeatedly delayed and ignored proposals from BJP corporators on public issues, basic amenities, and development programmes in their divisions.

During the Standing Committee meeting, Corporators Shravan (Malkajgiri), Akula Srivani (Saroornagar), and Mahender (Yusufguda) questioned the actions taken on their representations. Corporators are responsible for ensuring promises are implemented and monitoring development programmes. The BJP chief noted that the Mayor and Commissioner evaded questions and used police force against corporators, which he deemed unacceptable.

He further added that although the Central Government allocated over Rs 1500 crores for GHMC development, the failure to use these funds and the claim of insufficient resources, despite significant annual revenue, demonstrated irresponsibility. Rao described the use of police to surround, remove, and roughly handle three BJP corporators as a misuse of power and an assault on democracy. He demanded that the Mayor and Commissioner immediately apologise for their actions.
