BJP Corporator’s Appacheruvu sheds among demolished by HYDRAA

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Monitoring Protection Agency (HYDRAA) conducted a demolition drive on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Appacheruvu and Mamidi Cheruvu in Gaganpahad. During this drive, they targeted industrial sheds and constructions that were allegedly encroaching on the Full Tank Level (FTL) of the lake.
According to reports, one of the demolished structures belonged to Mailardevapally BJP Corporator Thokala Srinivas Reddy.
HYDRAA officials, despite heavy rains and tight police security, proceeded with demolishing structures, which were identified as encroachments on the pond lands.
Commissioner A.V. Ranganath of HYDRAA reported that the Appacheruvu Lake, which originally spanned 34 acres, has now shrunk to just 10-12 acres due to encroachments. This reduction in the lake size has led to a significant loss of life and property during the Hyderabad floods in October 2020.
Meanwhile, BJP Corporator Thokala Srinivas Reddy confirmed that some of the demolished structures belonged to him. He claimed that the land had been owned by his family since the 1980s and asserted that it was patta land. BJP Corporator Thokala Srinivas Reddy expressed frustration over the demolition, citing the lack of prior notice or time to respond.
He also said that a writ petition questioning the legality of the demolition without due process is still pending in the High Court.
“How can they demolish operating industries without notice?” questioned BJP Corporator Thokala Srinivas, highlighting the presence of small-scale industrial units with machinery on the land. “Officials are claiming that three to four acres of the land fall within the FTL, but the lack of due process raises serious concerns.”
