Top Maoist leader Ashanna, 140 cadres surrender in Bijapur

HYDERABAD: A senior Maoist leader and Central Committee member, Thakkellapalli Vasudeva Rao alias Ashanna, surrendered to the police along with 140 cadres in Bijapur district.

Police said Ashanna, who was a key figure in the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist), laid down arms along with 70 others in the presence of security forces. Among those who surrendered were Mad Division secretary Ranita, two members of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC), and 15 members of the Divisional Committee (DVC).
According to officials, the Maoists handed over more than 70 weapons at Uspari Ghat on the Indravati River. Security forces had tightened surveillance from Bhairamgarh to Uspari Ghat to prevent any untoward incident during the operation.
Authorities restricted the movement of civilians on the route to ensure safety and smooth conduct of the surrender ceremony. Police described the event as a major step towards restoring peace in the Maoist-affected region.
