Bigg Boss is based on the Dutch series Big Brother, developed by John de Mol. In the show, contestants known as “housemates” live together in a specially designed house, isolated from the outside world.

Each week, housemates nominate two fellow participants for eviction. The housemates with the most nominations face a public vote, and one contestant is eliminated. In the final week, the remaining housemates compete, and the public votes for their favorite to win. Unlike other versions of Big Brother, the Indian edition typically features celebrities as housemates.
