HYDERABAD: This weekend, Hyderabad’s theatre fans can look forward to an evening that will engage both their minds and hearts. The Bhoomika Theatre Group is bringing a new adaptation of Badal Sircar’s well-known play, ‘Dibbadesam Daataka’. In tribute to Sircar’s influential “Third Theatre” approach, the show will take place at Our Sacred Space on December 20 at 7:00 PM.

Originally written in Bengali, Dibbadesam Daataka explores the dangers of blind obedience and the hidden pressures of fear and conformity. Instead of elaborate sets, the play uses sharp satire and direct performances to encourage the audience to reflect on their own place in society.

This revival carries a resonant legacy. It has been adapted and directed by the late Udaya Bhanu Garikipati, founder of Bhoomika Theatre Group and a stalwart of Hyderabad’s theatre scene known for his socially engaged work. The production stands as a testament to Garikipati’s enduring commitment to theatre as a tool for dialogue and change.

More than a spectacle

Dibbadesam Daataka, in the spirit of Badal Sircar, challenges power structures. It questions blind obedience and the unseen walls built by fear and conformity. The play uses sharp satire, simple staging, and strong performances. It encourages the audience to think about their role in society and the systems they live in.

Following Sircar’s simple, audience-focused approach, Bhoomika invites viewers to experience an up-close and engaging performance rather than a grand show. The words, performances, and audience energy come together, making the venue a place for shared reflection.

For those who crave theatre with substance, this performance is more than a night out; it is a call to collective awakening. The group highlights that theatre isn’t just for entertainment. It’s a space for inquiry, awakening, and shared reflection.

Tickets are now available for this thought-provoking journey, offering an unforgettable evening of storytelling and introspection.
