Telangana Govt Rolls Out Mega Temple Upgrade Plan

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has begun large-scale redevelopment of major temples, and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy launched the works at the Basara Gnana Saraswati Temple with an outlay of ₹225 crore.
This initiative is part of a broader plan to upgrade key devotional sites. The government is focusing on improving infrastructure, enhancing pilgrim amenities, and preserving temple heritage.
Basara temple expansion to boost capacity and facilities
The Basara temple, which is the only major Saraswati shrine in South India, serves as a prominent centre for the “Aksharabhyasam” ritual that marks children’s entry into education.
Under the new master plan, authorities will expand the temple’s built-up area from 20,000 sq ft to 62,000 sq ft. They will also increase the sanctum and Artha Mandapam area from 2,000 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft.
In addition, planners will construct a nine-storey Rajagopuram on the northern side. At the same time, they will build seven-storey towers in the remaining three directions.
Moreover, officials will develop 33-ft-wide Mada Veedhulu (processional streets) around the temple. They will also create a sacred pond (Koneru) in the northeast corner.
Modern amenities planned for pilgrims
To improve the pilgrim experience, authorities will set up queue complexes that can accommodate up to 6,000 devotees. Alongside this, they will build a meditation hall with a seating capacity of 200 people.
Furthermore, the plan includes new kitchen facilities, dining halls, and a prasadam distribution centre spread across 20,000 sq ft.
Officials have ensured that all structures follow traditional temple architecture. They are using stone-based construction methods that align with established rituals. Notably, planners finalised the master plan after consulting the Sringeri Sharada Peetham.
Bhadrachalam temple works launched during festival period
Meanwhile, the government has also started development works at the Bhadrachalam Sitarama Swamy Temple, with an investment of over ₹500 crore.
The launch coincided with the Sri Rama Navami celebrations, which mark an important religious occasion at the temple.
Looking ahead, authorities are preparing special arrangements for devotees attending the upcoming Godavari Pushkaralu. These steps aim to ensure smooth pilgrim movement and provide better facilities.
