Banjara Hills: ₹69 lakh admission scam, two remanded

HYDERABAD: Police have arrested two accused in a ₹69 lakh cheating case in which students and parents were allegedly duped in the name of college admissions. The accused were remanded to judicial custody on Sunday.
According to police, the fraud was carried out through Knowledge West Educational Consultancy, operating under the limits of Banjara Hills police station. The consultancy was run by Hema Rohit along with others.
The accused allegedly claimed they had tie-ups with engineering and medical colleges in and around Hyderabad and promised admissions at low fees. Believing these assurances, several victims paid large sums, with the total amount collected touching ₹69 lakh.
After collecting the money, the consultancy shut down operations and the organisers went absconding. Following complaints filed by the victims in August, Banjara Hills Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Police arrested A-1 Hema Rohit and A-4 Bhavani Shankar and questioned them. After the accused allegedly confessed to the offence, they were produced before a court and remanded.
Police said Hema Rohit was previously involved in a similar cheating case in the Jubilee Hills area, where he allegedly ran an organisation named Checkmate, collected money through chit fund schemes, and later went absconding. A case had been registered against him earlier.
Police said efforts were on to trace and arrest the remaining accused, who are currently on the run.
