Bachupally residents seek drone spraying, encroachment removal at Ambir Lake

Hyderabad: Residents of Kakatiya Hills, Pragathi Nagar, and Bachupally in Hyderabad have raised serious concerns regarding the deteriorating condition of Ambir Lake (Amber Cheruvu). The lake has become a dumping ground for various wastes, including non-vegetarian waste, medical waste, household trash, and debris from dismantled buildings. According to the residents, local businesses are encroaching on the lake by removing its fencing and building shops, further damaging the area.
BRS Party member U. Jaswanth, representing the residents, wrote a letter to the Commissioner of Nizampet Municipal Corporation requesting immediate action to address the issues. The letter highlighted the need for drone spraying to control the rapid growth of water hyacinth in Ambir Lake, as well as the removal of encroachments around the lake and surrounding roads.
The letter stated, “The Ambir Lake is increasingly filled with waste materials, and due to the encroachments, the surrounding footpaths are also blocked, causing traffic issues, particularly between Pragathi Nagar and JNTU. Moreover, the accumulation of waste inside the lake is fostering the rapid growth of water hyacinth, which in turn creates an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, leading to health risks such as malaria and dengue.”

Residents have also raised concerns about the ongoing encroachments, specifically near Bathukamma Ghat in Pragathi Nagar, where nearly 100 meters of the lake area has been occupied for business purposes. Despite repeated requests to the previous commissioner, no action was taken to address these issues, according to the residents.
Brahmaiah Tallam, a local resident, spoke to Hyderabad Mail, expressing frustration over the situation. “Ambir Lake has become a dumping yard, and the smell and mosquitoes are unbearable. Who will stop the drainage from flowing into the lake? Who will remove the non-veg stalls occupying the main road?” Brahmaiah said.
The residents have also requested the authorities to initiate mosquito fogging, spray drone-based treatments to control mosquito larvae and install a new pipeline to prevent sewage water from flowing into the lake. They highlighted the importance of restarting the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to stop sewage contamination of the lake.
The residents of Pragathi Nagar are also urging the authorities to take immediate action to protect Ambir Lake and address the ongoing environmental and health issues caused by waste dumping, encroachments, and sewage contamination.
