Bachupally Residents Protest Industrial Pollution, Demand Pcb Action

Hyderabad: Troubled by the lack of clean air and vexed by the alleged inaction from the Telangana Pollution Control Board (TGPCB) authorities against the rising industrial pollution in their locality, the residents of Bachupally once again hit the streets to air their grievances and make their voices heard.

On Sunday morning, dozens of people gathered near ITC, Bolarum to participate in the protest led by former corporator Vijayalakshmi against the air pollution in their locality.

The protesters were seen holding anti-PCB placards and chanting slogans like ‘PCB down down’ and ‘PCB wake up’. They demanded that PCB authorities take action on their complaints regarding the air pollution caused by industrial emissions in their area.

“We have been complaining about the industrial pollution to the PCB authorities for a long time and no concrete action has been taken on our complaints,” a protester said.

They said locals are struggling to breathe due to unhealthy air quality caused by the unchecked industrial pollution in the area. The residents are demanding urgent action against toxic emissions from industries in nearby zones.

“The foul chemical smell emanating from industrial units is unbearable. The elderly are suffocating at night and early morning due to the toxic emissions being released by the factories into the air,” another protester lamented.

IDA Bollaram, Kazipalli, Bonthapalli, and Jinnaram localities are home to several pharma and chemical industries. The residents said that these industrial units are releasing highly toxic fumes into the air which is not only degrading the environment but also posing serious health risks to the inhabitants.

The local residents have been continuously protesting against the persistent industrial pollution in the area. Last month, a protest rally was held at Bachupally. The protesters also staged a dharna and resorted to road blockade in the locality.

Subsequently, the members of the Bachupally Area Welfare Association, along with former corporator Vijayalakshmi Subbarao met with the Chief Environmental Engineer (CEE) of the Telangana Pollution Control Board (TGPCB) in Sanath Nagar and submitted a representation to him, highlighting the problems being faced by them. In their formal complaint, the residents pointed out the indiscriminate release of chemical waste by nearby factories and its effect on the health of residents.
