HYDERABAD: Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and Hyderabad MP, on Friday said his dream was to see a hijab-wearing woman become the Prime Minister of India one day.

Owaisi cites Constitution, equality and inclusiveness

Addressing a municipal election campaign meeting in Solapur, Maharashtra, Owaisi said the Constitution guarantees equality and inclusiveness. He added that the Constitution allows any citizen to occupy the country’s highest office, regardless of religion, and that anyone could become Prime Minister.

BJP leaders respond sharply

Owaisi’s remarks triggered sharp reactions from Bharatiya Janata Party leaders. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said India is a nation rooted in Hindu civilisation and asserted that the Prime Minister would always be a Hindu.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla challenged Owaisi on X, saying the Constitution does not prevent anyone from rising to high office. However, he asked Owaisi to first make a “Pasmanda” Muslim woman or a hijab-wearing woman the president of his own party before speaking about the country.
