Aramghar-Zoo Park Flyover opens, benefits commuters across Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s second-longest flyover, connecting Aramghar to Zoo Park, was officially opened to the public on Monday, January 6, 2025, at 4 PM. The bi-directional, six-lane flyover spans 4.04 kilometers and was constructed at a cost of Rs. 799.74 crore. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy inaugurated the project.
The flyover is the second largest in size, following only the PV Narasimha Rao Expressway flyover, and is the 23rd flyover in the city. This new infrastructure is expected to reduce traffic congestion at five major junctions. They are Aramghar, Shastripuram, Kalapathar, Darul-Uloom, and Shivarampally. Additionally, it will provide easier access to Nehru Zoological Park and the surrounding areas, benefiting both daily commuters and tourists.

A Key Project in the SRDP
The flyover is part of the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), a major initiative to improve Hyderabad’s infrastructure. Construction of the flyover began six years ago but faced significant delays. When the Congress government assumed power, it sanctioned Rs. 140 crores to expedite the project, eventually completing it.
The flyover’s construction had been delayed multiple times, and its inauguration was postponed twice. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) approved the flyover in February 2018. Despite the setbacks, the project has now been completed, providing significant relief to residents of Mahabubnagar, Shadnagar, and Shamshabad, who had long faced traffic disruptions during their commutes.
Relief for Commuters
The completion of the flyover has been a significant relief for residents of Palamuru, Shamshabad, and nearby areas, including Zoo Park, Aramghar, and Shivarampally. It will also enhance traffic flow for travelers heading to Shamshabad Airport by providing a faster route from the Bengaluru National Highway and reducing congestion at long-distance vehicle checkpoints.
Additionally, the flyover has been designed with future traffic demands in mind, with considerations for traffic volume over the next 20 years. The project’s total cost, including land acquisition, amounted to Rs. 799 crores.
K.T. Rama Rao (KTR), the working president of BRS, expressed his happiness on social media regarding the inauguration. He stated, โI am delighted that the bi-directional six-lane flyover, which stretches over 4.048 km on the Aramghar-Zoo Park route, has been completed at an estimated cost of Rs. 799.74 crore. This project was developed under the Strategic Road Development Program (SRDP) by the KCR government. It is a flagship initiative that has greatly enhanced Hyderabad’s infrastructure.โ
KTR also highlighted the success of the SRDP, noting that 42 new projects had been initiated under this plan, with 36 already completed. He added that a few more pending projects are expected to be finished soon.

Concerns from Citizens
While many citizens have expressed happiness over the new flyover, some have raised concerns about the safety of the road. Several commuters have pointed out that the rumble strips installed on the flyover could potentially cause accidents. They argue that the strips, designed to alert drivers to reduce speed, may be hazardous due to the flyoverโs high-speed nature.
