Markapuram bus tragedy leaves 10 burnt alive as private bus catches fire after collision with tipper

HYDERABAD: At least 10 passengers were killed after a private travel bus collided with a loaded tipper and caught fire in Andhra Pradesh’s Markapuram region in the early hours of March 26, 2026.
The accident occurred between 6 am and 6:30 am as the bus, travelling from Hyderabad to Pamuru, collided with a tipper while most passengers were asleep. It was carrying around 40 passengers at the time.
According to preliminary information, the impact triggered a fire at the front of the bus, which spread quickly, trapping several passengers inside. Ten people were burned alive, while many others managed to escape.
Locals lead rescue, help passengers escape through windows
Locals rushed to the spot and began rescue operations before emergency services arrived. Several passengers were pulled out through the windows as flames engulfed the vehicle.
Both the bus and the tipper were completely gutted in the fire. Authorities said some bodies may still be inside the burnt vehicle.
Many survivors sustained serious injuries and were shifted to nearby hospitals. Officials indicated that the death toll could rise due to the severity of injuries.
Passengers asleep at time of crash, unaware of danger
Officials said most passengers were asleep when the accident occurred, which delayed their response and made evacuation difficult.
The exact cause of the collision is yet to be ascertained. Police have begun an investigation and are working to identify the victims.
PM Modi expressed grief over the Markapuram mishap, announced ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured, wishing speedy recovery.
Revanth Reddy expressed shock over the Markapuram bus accident, condoled the deaths, and said Telangana is coordinating with Andhra Pradesh to ensure medical aid and relief measures.
