Ameerpet nala project fails despite ₹25 lakh spend

HYDERABAD: A waste interception project in Ameerpet has failed due to poor maintenance, despite an expenditure of ₹25 lakh.
The ‘interception and diversion structure’ set up in the nala at Ameerpet to block waste and divert water has become ineffective. The project, built in 2013 under the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, was meant to trap waste and enable its removal at source. Instead, silt accumulation has increased.
The structure was constructed near Divyashakti Apartments along the nala that runs from Yousufguda via Ameerpet towards Begumpet. Its objective was to block floating waste and divert water towards Amberpet.
However, instead of preventing silt buildup, authorities have failed to remove accumulated waste regularly. In some cases, removed silt is dumped back into the nala, worsening the problem.
Sewage flow obstructed as debris accumulates
The system was designed to divert sewage into a chamber fitted with special gates, where waste would be trapped and only water allowed to flow ahead. The collected waste was to be cleared periodically.
Due to irregular removal and dumping of waste back into the nala, silt has built up heavily downstream. In addition, garbage bypassing the structure is getting trapped under a road culvert opposite Divyashakti Apartments, obstructing sewage flow.
Residents face foul smell as stagnation increases
Stagnant sewage due to silt accumulation has led to foul odour, causing inconvenience to residents in the area.
Staff of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation engineering wing remove silt occasionally after complaints. However, the issue recurs within days due to lack of sustained maintenance.
Residents have urged authorities to take corrective action and ensure proper upkeep of the interception and diversion structure.
