Residents protest proposed sewage treatment plant near Ameenpur colonies

HYDERABAD: Residents in Ameenpur have raised objections to a proposed 100 million litres per day sewage treatment plant (STP) planned in Survey No. 993. The facility is proposed near Modi Villas and Golden Palms colonies.

Locals said the project could affect not only these colonies but also Lingamaiah Colony, Sai Bhagavan Colony, and the Bhramarambika Mallikarjuna Devasthanam area. They fear the spread of foul odour across these neighbourhoods.

Around 150 families live in the two main colonies. Residents said the STP could lead to odour, health issues, and environmental pollution.

Tree felling, wildlife movement raise concern

Residents alleged that hundreds of trees are being cut at the proposed site. They said this poses a threat to peacocks and other wildlife in the area.

Due to ongoing excavation using heavy machinery, wildlife has started entering residential areas, they added.

Existing dump yard adds to residents’ worries

An existing dump yard near the site is already causing problems, residents said. They pointed to delays in garbage clearance and a rise in mosquito population.

They fear that setting up another large STP will worsen the situation.

Representatives of the Modi Villas and Golden Palms Colony Association said they plan to meet officials and elected representatives to raise their concerns.

They urged authorities to address the issue immediately.
