HYDRAA begins restoration of Bathukamma Kunta in Amberpet after court clears legal hurdle

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) Commissioner, A.V. Ranganath, on Wednesday launched development works at Bathukamma Kunta in Amberpet, following a favorable court ruling that cleared the way for restoration ahead of the upcoming Bathukamma festival.
The HYDRAA Commissioner performed a special puja at the site, accompanied by Vedic chants, marking the beginning of the work in the presence of local residents. He instructed officials to expedite the restoration, development, and beautification of the tank.
Ranganath stated that the tank would be ready in time for the Bathukamma festival. He urged residents to support the efforts, and the locals assured their full cooperation.
The development comes a day after the City Civil Court delivered a significant ruling in favor of HYDRAA. The court dismissed a civil suit filed by Yedla Sudhakar Reddy, who had claimed ownership of the site. Judge M. Venkateshwara Rao declared Bathukamma Kunta a heritage site, not a private reservoir, based on revenue records, village maps, satellite images, and Survey of India data presented by HYDRAA’s legal team.
HYDRAA officials said the judgment removes all legal hurdles, allowing work to proceed without delay. Commissioner Ranganath welcomed the ruling and congratulated the team that argued the case, including Standing Counsel members K. Anilkumar, S. Srinivas, B. Ajay, government advocate B. Janardhan, HYDRAA Inspector Mohan, and Legal Advisor Srinivas.
HYDRAA, under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, is overseeing development of six tanks across Hyderabad. The projects are funded by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). Work on Bathukamma Kunta initially began on February 18. During early excavation, water emerged from beneath the tank bed, reaffirming the site’s status as a living water body.
