Amberpet disaster volunteers train at Bathukamma Kunta

HYDERABAD:Â Young disaster volunteers visited Amberpet on Monday as part of a week-long training programme. They toured Bathukamma Kunta, where officials of the HYDRAA explained how the lake helps prevent flooding in surrounding localities during heavy rains.
Officials demonstrated boat-based rescue operations, showing trainees how to reach and evacuate people stranded during floods. The volunteers also undertook hands-on practice, moving around the lake in boats as part of the drill.

Trainees learn lake’s history and restoration
The trainees were briefed on the history of Bathukamma Kunta and the restoration work carried out after encroachments were removed. They were told that thousands of truckloads of soil were cleared to restore the lake, a transformation the volunteers described as significant. They also viewed photographs of Bathukamma celebrations held at the lake in the past.

Sixth day of disaster preparedness programme
The visit formed part of the sixth day of training for youth disaster volunteers drawn from colleges in the undivided Nizamabad district. The programme aims to prepare participants to protect themselves and assist others during natural disasters.
Trainees said they were given inputs on fire safety, the role of first responders during emergencies, how to react in crisis situations, and whom to contact for help. As part of the programme, they also visited areas in the Old City near Charminar that had witnessed a fatal fire accident involving members of a single family.
Several trainees said the training at the HYDRAA facility in Fathullaguda was valuable and had boosted their confidence and courage to respond during emergencies.
