Alwal hostel AC blast injures 15 students
HYDERABAD: Fifteen students fell ill after an air-conditioner exploded and triggered a fire at an education hostel in Alwal on Sunday, police said.
According to officials, the incident occurred at Nine Education Hostel located near a high-tension line in Alwal, under Medchal-Malkajgiri district. The five-storey building houses students of the same institute, who commute daily to nearby colleges.
A short circuit on the fourth floor led to an AC blast, causing flames to spread rapidly and thick smoke to engulf the premises. Panic gripped the hostel, forcing over 100 students to rush out. Some students fainted due to fear and smoke inhalation and were assisted out by others.
As smoke spread extensively, 15 students reported breathing difficulties and were shifted to a private hospital in Kompally for treatment. Fire services personnel reached the spot promptly and brought the fire under control.
Hospital sources said 11 students were discharged after first aid, while four continue to receive treatment.
Local residents questioned whether the hostel had valid permissions and adequate safety measures, alleging that lack of basic facilities had led to the incident.
