Aimim Wins Hyderabad Local Body Mlc Election, Bjp Secures 25 Votes

Hyderabad: In the Hyderabad Local Body MLC election, the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) emerged victorious. AIMIM candidate Mirza Riyaz Ul Hassan Effendi secured 63 votes, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Gautam Rao, who received 25 votes. The election, which took place on April 23, 2025, marked the first in 22 years for the Hyderabad Local Body MLC seat.

The election became significant as the BJP unexpectedly entered the contest, making it a two-party race between AIMIM and BJP. Out of the 112 eligible voters, which included 81 corporators and 31 ex-officio members, a total of 88 voters cast their votes, resulting in a 78.57% voter turnout.

AIMIM garnered the highest number of votes, followed by BJP. Among the ex-officio members, which included MPs, MLAs, and MLCs, both AIMIM and BJP received 9 votes each. Congress secured 7 votes from this group.

Prior to the election, several unauthorized banners calling for corporators and ex-officio members to vote against AIMIM were erected in parts of Hyderabad. These banners, written in Telugu, prompted the authorities to register cases against those responsible. GHMC Additional Commissioner Anurag Jayanti stated that these banners violated Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines and the Model Code of Conduct. The matter was reported to the Election Commission.

Security around the polling station was tight, with Section 144 enforced and around 200 to 250 police personnel deployed. The GHMC had set up two polling stations at its headquarters to accommodate the voters. Polling staff were trained, and additional officials were on standby to ensure smooth proceedings.

The counting of votes took place on April 25, 2025, determining the final result of the election.
