Adilabad man gets 10 year jail for abetting woman’s suicide

ADILABAD: A local court on Wednesday sentenced a 21 year old man to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹5,000 for abetting the suicide of a woman who took her life after he refused to marry her.

Assistant Sessions Judge C M Rajyalakshmi delivered the verdict after examining ten witnesses in the case registered at Adilabad I Town police station.

Case registered under IPC Section 306

According to police, the accused Upparapu Srinivas  a resident of Kajjarl village in Talamadugu mandal, was found guilty under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code.
The case (Crime No. 170/2023) was filed based on a complaint from the victim’s father,  Juvvada Narayana of Riyadi village in the same mandal.

Victim consumed acid after marriage refusal

The investigation revealed that the victim,  Praneesha, 21, a paramedical student at RIMS and employee of Adilabad Neuro Hospital, had been in a relationship with Srinivas for two years. When he recently refused to marry her, she consumed acid in a local park on November 29, 2023.
She was rushed to RIMS Hospital and later referred to Hyderabad, but died on the way.

Police efforts appreciated by SP

Following the investigation by Sub-Inspector A Haribabu, the charge sheet was filed in court. The prosecution, led by public prosecutor Shahina Sultana, proved the charges. The court’s legal officer, A Venkataamma, and duty officer, M Ashok, presented ten witnesses.
District Superintendent of Police Akhil Mahajan, IPS, congratulated the police team for their efforts in securing the conviction.
