4-year-old in Telangana diagnosed with rare Brucella bacteria, likely from infected dogs

Hyderabad: A 4-year-old girl from Kanagarthy village in Konaraopet Mandal, Karimnagar District, has been diagnosed with the rare Brucella atypical bacteria, an infection typically found in dogs.
The girl initially developed symptoms of fever, allergies, and joint pain. She was taken to a private hospital in Karimnagar, where her condition did not improve despite treatment. After several tests failed to provide a diagnosis, she was transferred to a hospital in Hyderabad.
It was there that doctors confirmed she had contracted the Brucella atypical bacteria, which is commonly transmitted from animals to humans. Doctors suspect she may have contracted the virus after playing with infected dogs in her village.
About Brucella Atypical Bacteria
Brucellosis is an infection caused by the Brucella bacteria, usually spread through contact with infected animals or by drinking unpasteurized milk. The atypical form of the bacteria is less common and can cause more serious health problems if not treated quickly.
After the diagnosis, the District Medical and Health Department started investigating the source of the infection. Early findings suggest that the child may have gotten the symptoms from contact with infected dogs or livestock in her village. Health officials are now testing animals in the area.
Health Advisory
The health department has advised the following:
• Avoid drinking unpasteurized milk or dairy products.
• Wash hands well after handling animals.
• Get medical help right away if you experience symptoms like fever, joint pain, or tiredness.
